Opening an Offshore Corporate Bank Account: KYC & Source of Funds

Forming the company is the easy part. Opening and keeping a bank account is where many offshore structures struggle — not because the business is problematic, but because the application is poorly prepared.
Banks operate under intense regulatory pressure and apply their own risk appetite on top of the law. The result is "de-risking": when a file looks incomplete, inconsistent or hard to understand, the bank simply declines. The good news is that most refusals are avoidable with preparation.
What banks actually assess
- Identity (KYC). Verified identity and address for every director, shareholder and beneficial owner.
- Source of funds. Where the money going into the account comes from — for example, trading revenue, investment proceeds or shareholder capital.
- Source of wealth. How the beneficial owner accumulated their overall wealth in the first place.
- Business rationale. A clear, believable explanation of what the company does, with whom, and why it banks where it does.
Documents to prepare
- Certified passports and recent proofs of address.
- Corporate documents: certificate of incorporation, registers, and a certificate of incumbency where required.
- Evidence of source of funds and wealth — bank statements, contracts, audited accounts, sale agreements or portfolio statements.
- A concise business plan or activity description and expected transaction patterns.
Practical tips
Match the bank to the business rather than chasing the best-known name. Be consistent: the story in your application, your documents and your first transactions should all line up. Respond quickly and fully to follow-up questions and to periodic KYC refreshes — silence is often read as risk. And keep your corporate housekeeping current, because banks revisit accounts, not just open them.
